Role Description:

Practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice and code of ethics as outlined by the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC) as well as within a client and family centred care model and the vision and values of the organization. The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse (WOCN) Clinician is responsible for promoting expert nursing care for clients (including family as identified by client) with an ostomy/continent diversion, skin and wound management problems, and incontinence. This role provides leadership in the delivery of care, in client/family teaching, and in staff/student development. Client group is in ambulatory, inpatient and residential settings.

Qualifications:

Baccalaureate in Nursing plus three years' recent medical/surgery nursing experience and an Enterostomal Therapy/Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse Certificate. Current practicing registration with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC).

Knowledge & Abilities:

Comprehensive knowledge of nursing theory and practice within a client/family centred model of care. Comprehensive knowledge of CRNBC’s standards for nursing practice. Comprehensive knowledge of the theories/concepts/principles relevant to clients, with ostomy/continent diversion, incontinence, and skin and wound management problems, across the continuum of care. Broad knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care across the continuum of care. Broad knowledge of research methodology. Demonstrated ability to effectively deal with others in a consultative/collaborative method. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated facilitation skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate with, and deal effectively with, clients and their families, co-worker, physicians and other health care staff. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work in collaboration with others. Demonstrated ability to plan and implement plans of care. Demonstrated ability to teach staff, clients and their families. Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and work direction. Demonstrated ability to perform the physical duties of the position. Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques. Skill in the use of equipment, and in techniques appropriate to assigned clinical area. Basic computer literacy to operate a computerized Patient Care Information System. Valid Driver's License and access to personal car.
